My daughter has an aquarium that's just a week or two old and I've been wondering if we should change the water yet, but our Mardel test strips always show no ammonia so we haven't bothered. Today I got suspicious and bought the API kit instead. Yikes! Not only lots of ammonia (not unexpected) but the nitrate and nitrite levels (which I could never figure out from the strips) are also clear and make sense. I've thrown the strips in the trash.
Note, too, that the Amazon price is terrific here. I just spent $30 buying this in a store because I wanted it today, but if you can wait a little bit, buying it online is the way to go.
This is a HUGELY better product that the strips. Yes, it takes longer, it's messier, it's a little tedious, but the results are easier to determine and most importantly, make sense!

There are a few excellent points about this test kit:
1) buying here saves you about 50% from the retail pet store
2) you get 800+ tests for ~ $17 vs. 25 tests w/ strips
3) results are far more accurate with liquid test kits like this one when compared to dipsticks
Note that of the 5 tests you can do with this, three of them require 5 minute waits before you read the colors, so it's not as fast as a dipstick. But honestly, this is such an economic choice, and it's accuracy far exceeds quick strips that it's ridiculous to buy them. Get this kit!

The test kit is an excellent way to test the water in your fresh water fish tank. i use this kit for my brackish water tank as well, and the tests still come out fine. the liquid drops along with the color cards make it easy to examine exactly what the test tube color reads. I would recommend this product to anyone who has fish who are intolerant to ammonia, nitrite.

I've shopped around at local stores and other internet sites and found Amazon to have the best price. Received in good condition all the glass test tubes were fine but one of the bottles of testing solution had a little bit leak out. Kit does come with a bottle of standard PH & a bottle of high range PH testing solution which most people would need one or the other not both. Which I would have preferred to get a Hardness testing solution in place of the standard PH testing solution.
